Durian Fruit Tree (Durio zibethinus)


 



Durian (Durio zibethinus) is an attractive
evergreen tree with pyramidal to dome shape form. If grown from seedling, it can grow up to 45 meters in height while from cultivars the maximum height can be up to 15 meters. Its fruit is generally believed to have an aphrodisiac effect, which adds to its popularity among Asians.

For durian lovers, supply of durian fruits are now available for longer months because its fruiting season in Luzon starts in January to February and its harvesting time falls in April to July wile in Mindanao, from August to October.

 However, planting durian in Luzon should be modified because of the waterlogged condition during the rainy season. Durian must be planted with double rootstock and provided with drainage otherwise, it should be planted in a mound or in an upraised bed. Common disease in Luzon are the Phythopthora root rot, Patch canker disease and cracking of stem and trunk - these can be easily remedied if the grower is already well versed with the diseases.
